Today is not a day of drawing or photographing, but a day to update my iTunes library with album artwork that is not available on the internet. As my scanner is not hooked to the same computer as my iTunes library, I have to send all these pictures to myself and then recoup them on the other side. Album covers always make for an interesting artistic display anyway. Enjoy!

Okay, kids, I'm finally back to doing what I used to do best. I started goofing around a few days ago and this was, by far, my favorite of anything I did. Don't ask the name or the gender, although you're free to say what you think about either. I was so elated I went downstairs and prematurely hooked up the scanner in my basement, which was only made possible about a week ago. Sorry for the long delay, more sorry to myself than to anyone else. Huzzah! We're back!

(note: no one was reading my reviews of the AFI Top 100 Movies anyway, so I'm just going to do that on my own when I feel like it. They can be read here if you really care.

COMICS UPDATE

I apologize for the temporary discontinuation of the Boo Guy Comics franchise. My scanner went down, then my computer went down, then my other computer went down, etc. I got off the drawing wagon for a while, but have been back full force this week. I came up with 2 different character/strip ideas, which is a great platform to build on.

Some great drawings have been hatched, and I've even pulled out my box o' drawings, which is full of a lot of tomfoolery from 1993-2003 and beyond. Once I get a new scanner, I'll have to archive all of my old stuff digitally in case something happens to the box. Even still, I should get a fireproof safe for it. My drawing box is where my greatness exists.

Anyway, don't lose heart. It's coming.

I'm a bit sidetracked for the moment. This weekend, there's a wedding.

Ponder this: I found out too late that Radiohead has a new album out that was available for free download. I thought maybe I'd just ask around to see if someone has it and can get it to me. Then I thought, I already have digital copies of almost all the previous Radiohead albums and have never listened to a single one in its entirety because, well, I don't like Radiohead. It's not even worth the effort of obtaining for free. I can now classify myself as befuddled by my own chagrin.

Also, we're now one step closer to driving speed control by computers. Within 20 years, there will be a governor on your car that is automatically controlled by emitters placed at 1/10 mile markers...or by satellite. Just like the microchips they're putting in dogs and kids, y'know, for safety, or OnStar, or cellphones, with the goal of being able to track everyone wherever they go. Techno-control is coming, and what's worse - YOU want it. YOU will ask for it. YOU already have.

Something happened during the last thunderstorm and my Linksys network got fried or something, meaning I'm going to have to spend an hour on Sundays on the phone with some Indian guy getting my system up and running again. This will mark the 4th or 5th time in a year I've had to do this because something was going haywire. If you're seeking wireless networking, look someplace other than Linksys. As soon as I'm back up, or have enough time to convert, burn, upload, and re-upload the files using the other computer, I'll get the last few Java Troll strips up. Good night.

I'm getting better...this is 2 in three days. Tomorrow I'm going to send out a dreaded mass e-mail to try to get people to come back and check it out...see if anyone really cares.

I had season tickets to SU Football my senior year. I finally said "Enough's enough" with Young Life and working and demanded that I have time to see all the games. And they didn't lose one, I don't think. They lost a lot on the road. Bums.

There was a quarterback controversy on the team thanks to a fickle coach who couldn't decide who to play. The previous week, we thought he had declared R.J. Anderson the full-time QB. We were happy to put that to rest. Troy Nunes was taking all the snaps the following game. The entire Dome booed the (expletive) out of this poor kid. Turns out R.J. was sick and couldn't play. Oops.

Regardless, I stand by the fact that Pasqualoni had really irked people with his indecisiveness and that's why we were booing the switch. No one who has already made up their mind about the evil in every member of the crowd that day will change their mind based on my testimony. Pasqualoni is fired, and the town is celebrating like they do in Monty Python and the Holy Grail...with a "Yay!"

The new job threw me out of my comic-posting routine. I am a creature of habit with few habits.

This seems like a good time to get the "Free Billy" thing running anyway. Brief synopsis: Billy Edelin got in trouble for some sort of sexual misconduct in the summer before his freshman year at SU. The University suspended him for a year. During that time, I created the "Free Billy" campaign. I graudated. The following summer, Edelin played in some men's 40+ rec league games, for which the NCAA suspended him another 10 games. During the second suspension, when I was in North Carolina, "Free Billy" shirts and posters apparently started popping up around the Dome. Thieves. SU wins the national championship. The following year, Edelin craps out halfway through the year because of depression/drinking. Last year (year 4 of the saga) he misses the early part of the season because of failure to meet academic requirements, mainly as a result of previous suspensions. He is in and out of the team in a tumultuous year. Now he is officially transferring. Too bad, he was a good player. Now, the saga ends with the reproduction of teh "Free Billy" comics. Enjoy.

Java Troll #60

The king of laziness at this point, I flip-flopped the picture of John and Troll to add a little variety. Surprisingly, the 3-panel comics of John and Troll in their natural positions (reversed from this) are few and far between.

If don't know about Donovan McNabb, ask somebody. Also, let me know if any of my images come up as broken links. I think I may have posted one or two as .psd files, which most people can't view.

This comic is fitting enough for today. It has developed its own story in the time since it was written. First, this comic somehow created enough of a connection that the art director published it a second time, as a "classic" strip. That's cool when that happens.

Also of note are the circumstances surrounding its creation. I was hanging out with Priscilla on the particular Sunday night that this was due. I had completely forgotten about it, so we rushed back to my basement and I fumbled around for the full hour that I had left. This is all I came up with. Guess that works.

The story that has developed since is...that the following semester Priscilla began dating Andy Craig, and they're going to be married this Saturday. I was invited, but my life is just too friggin' disarranged right now and I won't be able to get there. Man, that sucks.

This is the first real drawing I've done, pretty much since college. It's for my friend Gabi to give to her mom for Mothers' Day. It's okay, she hasn't seen her mom since Mothers' Day, so it's not technically "late".

I'm pretty pleased with the final product. You need things drawn, I hope you know where to go. I may have to start charging, though. My mom is already lining me up for a picture of our house. Fantastic.

Java Troll #56

A few semi-important notes here:

1) I am going to wait until Friday to begin posting the rest of the final semester of Java Troll. That should give enough people a chance to know what's going on.

2) I have a new job and have been neglecting my duties on here. Sorry about that.

3) I had begun running Ezekiel Quest at the start of the semester. Then IT happened on September 11th. Rather than continue with what I had done, I began to ask myself what Troll would think about this world changing event. So I reverted back to the old comic. I was out of practice and wound up doing this one by hand. This turned out to be a pretty excellent semester, better than those before it. Get ready...Troll #57 will be there on Friday morning.

So, yeah...um...some people I knew with Campus Crusade were trying to make up this huge, monstrous praise concert for all the Christian groups on campus to come together and worship God. Uh huh. They called it Eclipse. They had me draw a big chalk thing on the quad. They asked me to include it in my comic. It was right around Easter, I think. Can you tell how thrilled I am about all this? The thing bombed, poor turnout, and then the two girls who thought it up transferred. One of them is now married and writing some sort of online Christian magazine with no pictures. I salvaged the idea as best as I could. I've done better.

The decline of the American collegiate institution...Nobody got it. Well, one person got it, Andy Lynch, and he laughed hysterically, with good reason. This is one of those litmus test pieces of art that lets you know if you're really worthy.

I wish I still had the original for this. I was often in a hurry and just turned in the original. The day this comic came out was a beautiful day, just like the picture. When people saw it, they cut it out and posted it on their doors for the final month of the semester. It really caught everyone. It was the right picture at the right moment. One of my real triumphs.

Java Troll #45

This was from color comic day. The characters are, from left to right: John, Dana, Sharif, The Amish Guy, Troll, and Popcorn Girl. I got a chance to throw in a few extra characters I liked. This is the one that went to press, so no eye patch. Like anyone noticed.

Also of note was Popcorn Girl's orange skin, stabbing at the Long Island beauties on the SU campus who had fake everything. Hey, I think Blogger is letting me use titles and edit my posts again. That's cool.

This was fine. I originally meant to have Hendricks Chapel in the background, show SU campus. Problem is, I was throwing these things together in about an hour, most of which was spent coming up with the idea. That's why I usually just copy-pasted the pictures. When I tried to draw them, I was rarely happy with the results. The Troll doesn't look good here, and there is no scenery other than snow. The three kids walking are beautiful, though.

I woke up one February morning and realized it was cold out. I threw on a t-shirt, sweatshirt, and fleece and headed to school. When I got out of my car, I realized it was Valentine's Day and I was wearing a maroon fleece. I took it off to reveal a maroon sweatshirt. Couldn't do that, so I went in just a t-shirt. Which turned out to be pink. Of all the luck. Wearing red on Valentine's Day is so lame.

Dave Hopping is a funny guy. He was a campus comedian and my pal, so I made him a comic. He used to do songs, like a song about AIM to the tune of Jewel's "You Were Meant for Me" and a reverse-contrafaction style Christmas song from "The Hannukah Song" by Adam Sandler. He also used to take his shirt off and draw on his stomach. We was most famous, however, for his purple hat. I don't think he wears it anymore.

Thus begins the new semester. The most important development in the history of the comic thus far is the arrival of John's eyepatch. Being a fake rasta was just not enough for the Troll's foil. The three-part series on those friends who pop in and out of your life, and the frustration that sets in as a result, is alright but not spectacular.

After I compiled the first-year anthology, I gave it to the Syracuse New Times becaue I wanted a summer internship there. In the interview, the woman says to me, "You do realize we're an alternative news source, right?" which means "You're a Republican and we're Democrats, so we don't want you." That was fun. Ahh...the 2000 elections. I probably would have liked to go on to something else, but they just kept going. At least I got to make funny pictures for the third one here. My buddy Chad.

They really are great Halloween masks. I'll give myself that. The Pimpkin is also a stroke of creative genius, from back when a "pimp" was still the real kind, and not what kids today think it is. These four strips deal primarily with getting my high school physics lab partner, Doug Hemphill, to be the Vice Presidential candidate. Doug was at The Cuse at the time, which I thought was pretty funny. I know Doug appreciated it. The drawing was originally for a "Hempclone", which was a race of people who all looked exactly like Doug. I guess that's what you get sometimes when you ask me to draw a picture of you...haha.

The next four Troll comics. Today, I am back to writing myself schedules and WORKING HARD. I got a little sidetracked after my spring break vacation. Let's see...comments for these comics...At this point, I was starting to understand the Troll, but I hadn't quite nailed down the artistic style yet. The side shots are stupid and annoying to me. There's no need to ever see anything different from the Troll than you see in the second comic here. Front view, coffee. Also, the first name thing again. Amazing how characters take on a life of their own, how I can look back and see mistakes I made because I didn't know them well enough yet. Fascinating.

At the end of the first year, I made an anthology and put 4 comics to a page. This is what I've been using to post Java Troll, and I'm getting a little impatient scanning one comic at a time. At some point, I started doing the entire comic on the computer. I'm really looking forward to being able to do those. Until then, I think I'm going to speed-publish, giving you a full anthology page a day...barring any objections. A note about the comics...Political comics and humor are supposed to be pretty neutral, attacking everyone equally, but seldom are even though they pretend to be. I'm no pretender.

Libertarians believe in legalized prostitution. The image quality on this is poor because the face of the Troll here is a copy of a copy of a copy of a copy of a copy. I drew his face, scanned it, used it in the comic, printed that, wrote in the dialogue, then it was scanned into the paper, copied into the anthology, and then re-scanned to go online. I don't know if I even have a copy of the original. At least the comic still exists.

The apparent need to give the Troll a first name is another early error. The context of the campaign really didn't require him to have a first name, and the context of his life certainly doesn't. Just like the second comic of the Troll series, this one has little knowledge of the characters' personalities and lifestyles. Here, we see Troll as a college student. That makes no sense. He's obviously never been very motivated about much in his life, and he's too old by now anyway. Nonetheless, it is a comic that I published, so here it is. In the second comic, the one about the constricting panels of the comic, Troll should have been John and John should have been Troll. How could I have known that then, though?

I remember standing on the quad and having a buddy of mine tell me he liked this one. I was humble and thought it was corny. The other guy besides Troll is John. The original caption on the drawing of John was "John the Fake Rasta". Yeah.

Okay, I think I have this publishing problem figured out. This is actually comic 4 of the Java Troll series, but was published first because they put the pilot into the Daily Orange backwards. Heck, I didn't find out my submission had been accepted until I saw it in the paper. Writing alternate definitions became a standby for me in Java Troll. I probably did about 10 like this, but most of them were better. We're back on track, folks, and I'm getting some new ideas together for when I run out of Troll strips.

Yesterday, I have no excuse for. I probably could have posted one on Sunday, too, meaning today would be day 3 of Java Troll. Instead, my spring break nature has caught the best of me. I was lazy or forgetful enough not to post until today. So I tried to post today, twice, and the picture got lost in transit both times. It even appeared for a brief moment on the blog, but when I tried to add text, it spontaneously combusted. Sorry. I'll try to get this all worked out tomorrow. Darn blog.

Having finished both Pie School and Physics Class Hero, I'm about ready to start with Java Troll, the cornerstone of my collection to this point. At this time, I am also gearing up to go on the Spring Break I never had because I was always working. From March 12-20, I will be in Pensacola and New Orleans, among other cities. This will also constitute a hiatus from blogging my comics, but this proves to be the right time to take a break before I hack at the classics hardcore.

In the meantime, I want you to enjoy one of the few remaining intact pieces of notebook from my college years. I think the high school notebooks were all trashed. Note how the original date box was turned into a hat for a coffee drinker, and how the notes are really pretty unintelligible. How I got A's is beyond me. I never paid attention, just drew pictures and stared out the window.

The girl's lines are from some techno song that was on the radio around the time we wrote the comic. I hadn't heard the song and didn't hear it 'til much later. Those are the only lines in the song. What a weird song...and yes, that is chest hair.

If you get the joke, I'm sorry. I have matured since then and no longer believe that the joke was in good taste. I don't think I ever did. The other kid is the roommate, and we also see the second manifestation of the "Litmus Paper" t-shirt. I think this is the comic that got our comic shelved, being at a liberal university. Either that, or the whole idea just wasn't very good.

If this seems cryptic, is by intention. Do not ask me about it or mention it. Just leave it alone. That will be all for today.
